Cars & Test Drives

Friday, March 31st, 2006

Recently, I was thinking about upgrading to a new car and was looking at the options. And, I had a few requirements..

1. Should haul more than 5 people..

2. Should have good luggage space

3. Power Steering and AC

4. Low maintenenance and Low cost body repairs (I am living in chennai, where any car/4 wheeler are prone to kisses by other vehicles)

5. Budget upto 6 lakhs max.

Finally I landed on 3 options..

1. Maruti Versa DX

2. Tata Sumo Victa EX

3. Mahindra Bolero Sportz

Maruti Versa DX:

Versa is one awesome package from Suzuki for Rs.4.9 Lakhs (on road). Ditch that outer looks.. you get a convenient mini-innova for half of Toyota Innova’s price. Powered by Esteem’s 1.3L petrol engine that churns out 82 BHP output, it cruises effectively in city traffic and long roads. With fully loaded, Versa can be manouvered easily, no body rolls in the corners, smooth and swift. Powered by a good engine, capacity to accomodate 7 passengers, foldable last row seats.. and a decent AC. Versa is a mini-innova. Poor selling points is the bad outer looks.

Tata Sumo Victa EX

Victa is the spiced up or say “bug-fixed” flavor of the Sumo. It has new dash, better interiors, fixed body problems and a refined Diesel engine. Priced around Rs. 5.92 lakhs on road, Victa proves to be good on road. Has good riding, making you feel as though you are driving a military tank.. coz Victa is so wide.. and big inside. Decent AC, Good brakes.. refined steering that gives you Car-like feel, Better dash, sports knob gear lever, good riding and responsive engine. Ride quality is compromised, as body rolls are still not upto the mark.. and the somehow i still feel Victa is still bumpy. Pros include, good outer finishing, refined interiors and fixed bugs. Cons include bumpy ride and audible body sounds during running.

Mahindra Bolero Sportz

Bolero is a long term player.. the big brother of Armada. Bolero sportz has

Power steering, AC, 2.5L diesel engine and capacity to haul 7 people at once. Test drive proved to be good.. better than sumo, no body rolls, decent AC, good road view.. and better performance. Priced around Rs.5.89L on road. Pros being good engine, better ride, good AC.. cons being looking like an utilitarian vehicle.

Finally I have set my eyes on Mahindra Bolero.. 8)

Deli Express @ Velachery

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

Deli Express is an attempt to cater the taste buds of velachery people, who love briyani.

Interiors

The outlet is a 16′ x 25′, air tight (no AC as of now, but I was told that it will be installed soon) dine in. Very decent interiors, 6 full speed ceiling fans, black stone tables, short and precise menu. They serve mineral water as well as Branded mineral water for those brand concious.

Jack Daniel ?

Wanna mix? buy a pepsi and sprite, mix 10% of pepsi in 70% of sprite, you get Jack Daniel look-alike excluding alcohol. Mix more and you get Royal Challenge look-alike excluding alcohol. Anyway, thats a good fun actually.

Menu

Back to review. Deli Express offers briyani in Kilos for family events, regular take-aways and Dine in. Take aways costs Rs.2 more than dine-in menu. Its a briyani outlet, so their menu offers Veg, Chicken, Mutton, Fish and Prawn Briyani. In starters, you will find Veg rolls, chicken rolls, fish rolls etc. No soups.

Chicken 65 boneless, Chicken 65 and Fish Fry are extra add-ons.

Serving

Briyani is served in limited quantities, weighs around 200gms i guess. Standard sidekicks, the brinjal chatni and onion raitha are served in two small cups. And yeah, the sidekicks are unlimited. Egg is served in non-veg briyanis.

The Taste

The success of a briyani, is determined by the taste and dhum.. Well, Deli Express positions itself on a decent scale that pleases those who like to have food from a good looking restaurant. I find nothing terrific. Stands between mughal style briyani.. and chettinad style briyani.

Conclusion

Deli Express - for those who want to eat briyani, and dont care much about the taste. I will hop to Thalapakattu, which is better in taste. And only if thalapakattu is full, I may park my bike at Deli Express. Btw, the pricing is decent. Every dish costs around Rs.50.

PS : Guys, Deli Express is next to ALLSEC! ;-)
