Sovi Chicken @ Taramani Road

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Note : For pure non-veggies only.

Sovi Chicken is not a restaurant.. not a speciality chicken cuisine. Its just a plain “chicken kadai” at Taramani road. Its on the main road, close to the junction near American school. It sells fresh chicken dishes. Serving and Take away available.

Menu

Sovi chicken is a plain chicken meat shop. In the evening, they serve Fried chicken with Bone, Fried Chicken boneless, Lollipop chicken and Tandoori Chicken (against prior order). The kitchen starts at 7pm and closes at 9.30pm. The dishes are sold in weight quantities.

Boneless 100gms : Rs.18

with Bone 100gms : Rs. 16

Lollipop & Tandoori - Sorry. I donno :-)
No extra charge for take away.

Pay the cash at the counter, deliver the bill to the guy at kitchen and your dish is prepared freshly.

When I entered for the first time.. I had a big question. How it is possible for them to sell at Rs.18 prcie tag. I even wondered.. is that “kaakaa meat”? So for checking I bought a 50 gm and tasted it. Wow! its real chicken. No kaaka curry.

Masala & Oil

The masala is not a chinese or north indian preparation. Its a plain and simple garlic/onion/ginger mix. Spicey and fresh. They use Gold Winner oil and so, safe.

Tables and Chairs

There are two tables and six chairs. Open air.. along the road. Luckily it is not too close to the road. So those who dont mind the “kayendhi bhavan” style, can very well enjoy.

Taste

This is a pure authentic madras taste. Not something chinese or tandoori.

Conclusion

Got some visitors for dinner and wish to serve chicken? Sovi chicken is the answer. If you are bachelors and wanna host a weekend party at home, Sovi chicken is the damn economical answer. A cool price tag and madrasi masala taste makes Sovi chicken a good bet against pricey non-veg cuisines in velachery.

PS : The chicken is deep fried in oil. So its little oily, and those who have a sensitive stomach, suggest to go for a trial and then buy in full scale.

Rathna Cafe @ Velachery

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Ok Ok. There were lot of comments about Rathna Cafe in our blogs already. I am very late in posting my review. Frankly, I never got a chance to write a review. Few weeks back, I visited the restaurant few times, and it was totally crowdy and couldnt get a seat.

Last week and today I paid a visit to that restaurant. Here is my review..

Rathna Cafe

2 years back, when I was in royapettah, I have visited triplicane RC a couple of times and enjoyed their spicey Sambar Idly. And, that was cool to watch the Sambar being served in a mug and not in a spoon or “karandi” whatever.

If compared with Coimbatore Annapoorna’s sambar idlis, RC’s sambar idlis are definitely nowhere near. But for chennai, it’s one better option.

Sambar Idly

The idlys are not hard .. not soft. Came in a bowl surrounded by pool of sambar. The taste is spicey.. and okay. I am not sure, the taste was similar to the one i tasted 2 years ago. But there was the mark of Rathna Cafe.

Executive Lunch

Order an Executive Lunch and you will be served 3 variety rices (of course one is always the default curd rice), appalam, sweet, poriyal, rice fryums, Poori and kurma. The quantity is executive. Means.. not more.. not less. You wont feel sleepy after the lunch.

So the taste? Well the brinje rice is okay, but the variety rice.. I donno whether it is tomoto rice, or tamarind rice or lemon rice.. its something new or weird, and it more or less average in taste. Finally the curd rice.. well I should say Cake Rice.. coz it was not properly prepared. The curd was okay and fine.

Pricing

Outrageously costly for the name and veg dishes served. Rs.18+tax for two sambar idly is not worthy. Executive Lunch at Rs.42 + tax is unbelievable.

Conclusion

An average veg restaurant, serving some decent dishes. But scares with its pricey menu. But as of now, RC is the only “average-decent” veggie restaurant in velachery.

PS : Now i want to rewrite a sentence. “… But for chennai it’s one better option -> But now, chennai got a better option, the Murugan Idli Kadai”

CRM - Importance of easy UI Customization

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

This is another observation. Companies have different type of UI requirements. For example, company A wants the layout of the Invoice UI to resemble their real invoice (well, I am talking about the form fields positioning). Or atleast, the order of filling the form data should be resembling the real invoice. Company B might want to edit the layout altogether to a different sequence. So different companies have different UI requirements. And one fixed UI cannot answer everyone’s requirements.

So how to answer this ? May be a pre-defined set of UI’s (basic invoice, advanced invoice etc) that are derived as the result of extensive user research which includes User meetings, Think aloud sessions bla bla blaa.. will do? I believe it may answer to a basic set of users, but not everyone. In my opinion, some tool, some visual tool (aided by AJAX/Javascript for webapps) which can alter the layout of each UI will be a better answer.

The UI editor can be used to move the fields, re-arrange the order, insert/remove a field/label, grouping etc. Given this tool, the system integrator / the CRM admin can modify the layout to suit their needs. And that’s what needed.

Mouse phone & Usability

Friday, May 12th, 2006

Read from mail that Sony has introduced a Mouse which doubles as a Internet Phone. Skype will be certifying that gadget soon.

Thats good.. but I have my few concerns over this gadget. I donno whether this gadget is really usable or not.

Say for a practical application, I call my friend at Burlington through skype.. and we chat for a while and thats cool.. I flup the mouse and place it on my ear and chat “machaaan…. eppidi irukka.. bla bla blaaaa”. Soon he informs me that he has hosted his recent tour photos in flickr. Now I open the browser.. type www.flickr.com and …uh oh.. wheres my mouse? Damn this is not good. I need a mouse to move the cursor.. but practicaly I am unable to do it.

I need to flip it back, place it on the table and move the cursor.. then open it again and talk with him. What a dad design and idea.. Sony! please redesign it.
