Solaris 10
Tuesday, October 31st, 2006I am not a Solaris guy.. had totally spent some 15 mins with an old Solaris ultrasparc in the AdvnentNet test labs. But I know Solaris is a rock solid.. enterprise class OS that runs on non-X86 arch. But then I wished Windows to have such rock-solid stability and other security features.
When I saw ads and Sun’s corporate page inviting to download Solaris 10, I am very delighted. Looks like a good move for Sun to get into the desktop market too. The features may amuse those serious guys.. like architects, developers and system techies.
From the reviews, I sense the OS is targeted towards small/Medium office segments that includes 32/64 bit X86 support for the first time. Though the OS seems to have some basic entertainment software, it doesn’t look like a viable alternative for Windows or Linux.
Narayan Newton’s First look at Solaris 10 should give you a quick idea. For more detailed review read LinuxPlanet’s article here.
Interesting.. Sun is finally attempting a sensible move and trying to re-gain some market presence in desktop level too.
