Excerpt:

The two reasons people say no to your idea

“It’s been done before”
“It’s never been done before”

Even though neither one is truthful, accurate or useful, you need to be prepared for both.

Animated UI Prototypes - UI Design using Adobe Photoshop / Imageready

Animated User Interfaces using Adobe Photoshop / Imageready

I had to spend some additional time explaining my idea about a drop down menu UI to a developer. I tried to explain the concept in a paper.. and sketchboard. But still I felt, the developer didn’t understand what I meant. The meeting was over .. and we decided to meet after an hour. Sitting in my table.. suddenly I got the idea of using Adobe ImageReady to create a animated prototype. Launched Adobe Photoshop and created the elements such as Tabs, colors, text etc..and placed the elements that appear/disappear on seperate layers. Then launched ImageReady, created few frames and carefully selected which layers (elements) should appear/disappear for each frame. Then set the timing for each frame. After animating the image was over, I exported the image in GIF format and sent it to the developer via email.

He came to my seat within 5 minutes with a big grin.. “Rajesh.. That’s excellent. It is very clear now. No confusions”.  And then, I started loving ImageReady. A long ago, some wise man said :”A Picture is worth 1000 words”  :-D   Here is the animated image I shown to my developer.

Zoho CRM’s improved Web to Lead UI

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Zoho CRM is under tinkering. The process was about to start a long ago. But due to performance (framework and hardware) operations, the process was kept pending. Now having powerful cluster of servers, the tinkering has started now. I am starting with the Web to Lead UI. Here is a sneek preview of updated UI.

Web to Lead - Zoho CRM

The twin tab approach gets a bye-bye. All options are included in the same UI, saving time and avoiding navigation confusions. If everything goes well, this may get into the product !

Zoho Wallpapers - 3

Monday, March 26th, 2007

This is my another set of wallpapers for Zoho. The color schemes may be pretty weird for many and some may feel that this is too bright! Anyway if you like them, just use it. :-)

Improving RankQuest.com - HTML Validator tool UI

Improving RankQuest.com - HTML Validator tool UI

Following my previous post about Improving User Experience in 2 hours, here is another UI which I designed for Rankquest.com’s HTML Validator tool. RankQuest is a great site for SEO Techies. They offer good articles, and some cool tools that are really useful for website managers and developers.

HTML Validator

HTML Validator is one such simple tool, which uses HTML Tidy in the back-end. Their front-end UI is pretty basic and the results closely follow the Tidy’s result pattern, which is difficult to read and grasp the overall result. My UI suggests a simple dashboard which says whether the URL given is OK or BAD using a single icon metaphor. And within a single line it lists the number of errors and warnings.

Below the dashboard, there comes the RankQuest HTML Scanner. This is my idea of showing “where the error is” instead of a lenghty “Line 1 Coloumn 32: erroor”. This precisely gives the visual location of where the error is. A user who is using dreamweaver (code mode) or simple HTML editor can visually identify the location of the error or warning. This UI shows the code in error with a colored background. When the user hovers his mouse over the colored code, a pop-up (DIV layer) opens up with the information using the “Line X Coloumn Y :[ Error].. [Error Description]” pattern. In addition, the default HTML Tidy style results is shown below too. Users who feel comfortable with TIDY’s style can still access the result report. To save the result for future reference or editing, the UI offers a link to download the report as a file.

Conclusion:

Proper white-spacing and adding visual clarity could increase the user experience of any UI. This is one such attempt to validate this point. :-) If you wish to share any comments, do send a message to rajeshsundaram at adventnet dot com. Thanks.

Indian Cricket Team’s Poor performance & People’s Reactions

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

I was once an avid cricket fan for my beloved Indian Cricket Team. When the cricket and team moved towards business, I lost interest and stopped supporting it. I don’t even watch cricket now. From today’s newspaper I read that India had lost to Bangladesh and fans showed their angry reactions everywhere. Posters were burned, chappals and sandals kissed Cricket hero posters somewhere.. and even some angry fans tried to damage Dhoni’s house which is under construction.

Well… In a way, people’s reactions show the kind of expectations they had.. or has for their cricket heros. They expect a lot.. coz they love a lot and  pay a lot. Did I say pay a lot? Yes, when the cricket stars endorse some products.. and when you buy those products, you pay those stars indirectly. (I don’t mind calling the buyers as indirect employers!). And in turn, fans expect good results. In a world cup match.. fans expect their team to win that cup. Or atleast show awesome / great / good performance, in case if the cup is lost. They dont want a bad criticism or bad name.  From what I heard and read, Indian team had upset the whole nation with their under-performance in India-Bangladesh match.

On a angry note I would like to ask the team players.. what else do you need? You have great sponsors, amazing cash-flow, constant lime-light, happy family and everything else one could dream for. Why don’t you guys really respect your fans? Why wont you play?  :(
