Intel’s latest SSD is a right and promise-sounding device that could boost performance of Cloud applications in coming years. Right now, Cloud servers rely on hi-speed server Hard disk’s to serve the intensive R/W requests. Tom’s Hardware’s recent review about Intel’s X25-E SSD brings a lot of hope that very soon SSDs will find a niche place in Application and web servers. Thus leading to two server categories in the future : Hi-performance servers Vs Standard servers, using SSD and Hard disks respectively. Since SSDs can deliver a 10X performance boost than traditional HDDs,we can expect Cloud computing, Data mining apps , Reporting tools and time-intensive web applications can overcome the ‘delay’ / ‘time-consumed’ factor.
As of now, SSDs are completely a luxury and a lifestyle element. Intel’s entry into server focused SSD will push other manufacturers to introduce hi-performance disks as well. Over the time, the price and capacity of SSDs will reach a level where they are affordable enough to replace the hard disks and that is when, cloud applications will become much more faster.
