Today, I had been to a school near my house to pose for my Voter ID card. Without any surprise, there was a big queue to contend with. Waited for almost an hour but didn’t feel that I had stood for so much time. Well the important reason behind that was the fact that the school setup took me back to my own school days and I was drawing parallel to all the incidents that took place in the campus as against my own experiences. To name a few of the incidences :

1. A period Bell after 40 odd minutes

2. Small Kids seated in 1-2 Foot high benches.

3. A teacher using a scale to punish a few children

4. A girl kneeling in front of the office for being late (I guess)

5. A student (may be the class leader) coming to office and collecting a couple of Chalk pieces.

and much more simple things.

A real refreshing flashback.. Missing those days very much … Wish I could go back in time..

Windows Windows Windows

I was browsing through a download site (download-by.net), looking for various tools in the database domain. The tools ranged from DB explorers to Change Managers to Backup to ….. tools for multiple purposes.. There was one thing common though amongst most of the tools.. YES, more than 95 % of the tools run only in windows platform (though the tools that work on MySQL, PostgreSQL and other databases dont have a mandate to run in windows platform). If the tools are for MS Access, SQL Server and Excel it is quite understandable but even otherwise, windows seems to be unanimous choice for DB tool developers…

One more observation… Java doesn’t seem to be a preferred platform for such DB tools. Performance may be biggest reason behind this.

There is definitely Windows monopoly here..

Increase in FANs for a PC

I am sure the content below is going to be different to the one you probably guessed/expected when you read the blog topic.

We work with computers day in day out but I am sure little will be known to many of us about the hardware inside it.

Its been almost five years now since I had a chance to look at the ubiquitous Intel Mother Board. Myself and couple other class mates of mine had assembled my computer five years back. It was a 233 MHz MMX processor machine.

That time around there was one FAN in the entire cabinet and it was the SMPS fan. But when I looked at the recent one, I could see FOUR fans. The PROCESSOR comes with a FAN understandably for its increased power. The surprise package was the FAN on the Video Card ( I think I am right here since the output from the card was running to the monitor). And then there is another FAN common to the entire cabinet powered by the mother board itself.

Understandably increased power of processing comes with a penalty on heat dissipation. The same kind of PCs are getting used in offices and homes. Where as in office we have the luxury of Air-conditioner for the PCs, many might not have it at home. Is it that it would have some bearing on the life and performance of the PCs. One factor to consider while comparing is the usage ofcourse.

Just curious to know how this heat dissipation is tackled in Laptops. Sure this must be a research area. Because increasing the number of fans for increasing the processing power may not work out to be an optimum solution for laptops. Anybody has any info on this ? I haven’t yet had an opportunity to look into the inside of a laptop.
